Monument Valley 2, a surprise sequel to ustwo Games’ beloved 2014 hit, just sprang out of nowhere and landed on the App Store. It was unveiled on stage at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference earlier today (alongside some other very cool stuff) and is available to buy right now for $4.99.
According to the press release, the game takes place in the same gorgeous, reality-warping universe as the original, but tells an entirely new story centered around dual protagonists; a mother named Ro and her daughter. Naturally, your job as the player is to help guide this pair of adventuresses through a series of mind-bendingly MC Escher-esque buildings and landscapes. The trailer below does a good job of introducing Monument Valley 2’s new characters and showing off a glimpse of its crazy levels and illusory puzzles.
Dan Gray, ustwo Games’ Studio Head, had this to say about why he and his team decided to go in a more story-driven direction with Monument Valley 2:
