Spark it Up Review

Sweet Harmony

Spark it up (out now, free) is a hard game to define. At its core it’s a music game but with a Fruit Ninja-esque style of play. You really have to try it out for yourself to get a feel for it.

Right off the bat you can see that the game is well polished. You can tell that care was taken to try and get the game to be as well presented as possible. Crisp graphics and clean menus are great to look at and everything is very smooth. Throughout my time with the game I ran into no problems and the game is very responsive to all actions. As this is a music game at heart, the sound has to be outstanding. Luckily, the game pulls off the music very well. You get 6 free songs with the game and you have the choice to unlock the complete 10 if you so choose. The music is nicely varied and the sound quality is great. You’ll definitely be surprised at how good the music quality is, especially when you take into account that the game is going for free.

Spark it Up Screen

There are two game modes. An arcade mode tests you on how high a score you can achieve and a relaxed mode leaves you to enjoy the music, giving you the freedom to do as you please. The premise of the game is simple. Fireworks are let off and pause momentarily in the air to allow you to swipe your finger across them. You get points for each firework you burst and you sometimes get the odd dragon popping from the background which will give you extra points if you manage to click on it. Every touch to the screen makes a nice tune although it doesn’t always fit with the background music. It can be fun trying to get a nice tune going and those of you who enjoy making music or playing musical games are sure to have fun. Spark it Up is a cute game. The presentation is great, music well done and it’s an overall a well made title. It’s a little odd and may not be up to everyones taste, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t give it a go. Game Center integration and achievements would be a great addition but apart from that I can’t see what more can be done to improve the game.

iFanzine Verdict: At the low price of free, it’s very easy to recommend Spark it Up. It’s a unique game that you should definitely check out. How long it’ll last you depends on how much you enjoy rhythm games.
