The First Trailer for ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ Has Landed

Sony just debuted the first trailer for The Angry Birds Movie on YouTube and as a long-time (admittedly lapsed) fan of the games it looks to me like they’ve done a pretty decent job of transitioning this plot-light series to the silver screen. The animation is slick, I dig the new, anthropomorphic character designs for the birds and piggies, and most of the jokes and sight gags in the trailer land, so, if the story’s up to scratch, this could be a good time for kids and big kids alike.

The only potential barrier to the 3D animated flick’s success is the fact that the whole Angry Birds craze seems to have kind of died down of late. Still, even though it’s not as popular as it once was, Angry Birds as an IP probably has enough of an in-built audience and brand recognition-powered clout for the movie to make a sizable dent in the box office.

Check out the trailer and accompanying blurb:

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds — or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis — We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride — This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.

The Angry Birds Movie is arriving in theaters May 2016. I’m pretty sure Rovio will also have a tie-in game ready for the occasion — The Angry Birds Movie: The Game, maybe?
