As much a work of slick art nouveau as it is a videogame, "Gun Fu" is a good example of how much a developer can accomplish with a minimalistic approach.
Wanted: artillery commander to stop land-hoarding megalomaniac. Shortage of manpower requires doubling as an engineer during off-hours. Should your brain survive, compensation will include Game Center bragging rights and a Multiplayer Mode that's pretty darn good.
An unconventional title that's difficult to categorize neatly into any one genre, "Vermes on Mars" should appeal if you're open to a sci-fi action game that's got plenty of meat on the bones and requires some methodical real-time strategizing.
Overdosing on saccharine-sweet and cutesy titles can be a bit of an occupational hazard when working in the iOS games biz, so thankfully Gameloft have cooked up an antidote in the shape of 9mm, a hard-R rated, adult-toned third-person shooter that blends Grand Theft Auto's gritty aesthetic with pulse-pounding slow-mo gunfights à la Max Payne.
Aztlan Games sure like their creepy critters! Fresh off last April's "Multipods: Escalation," they're back already with lots more crawly things, and after some hands-on time with "Vermes on Mars" we're glad to see that they're really upping the ante! Action fans who are looking for depth and some fun on-the-fly strategizing will want to keep a keen eye on this one as it nears release.
This just in: the next project that "6th Planet" collaborators Monkube and Ape Entertainment are going full throttle on is none other than "The Adventures of Retrobot!" This time around Monkube has added the talents of Endeavor Bros., a Canadian indie developer, into the creative mix, and it looks like an exciting arcade shoot 'em up/comic book fusion has resulted!
Deathsmiles will wow and exhilarate you, then challenge and baffle you before understanding finally washes over you and sends you to a peaceful place full of gothic monsters, neon projectiles, and insane score multipliers. This, my friends, is bullet hell Zen.
Well, color us impressed! This is the kind of arcade experience we could use a lot more of on iOS -- even if long-time fans of sidescrolling shoot-em-ups are liable to find it a little on the easy side.
In Evil Dead by Trigger Apps, you play as Ash, the wise-cracking, axe-wielding hero taking on an ancient evil. Does the latest game to ride the Bruce Campbell cult vehicle live up to its license or is this just one more page in the book of the dead? Steel yourself and press ahead, dear readers…if you dare!
I'm still trying to figure out why this bandana-wearin', heat-packin' pooch has outfitted his little sailboat with lasers and a jet engine, but suffice it to say Captain Slobber is out to prove that he's top dog. While this one is much too lightweight for sidescrolling shoot 'em up veterans, casual gamers drawn in by its art style should find it a fun and well crafted diversion for the short time it lasts.
