As much a work of slick art nouveau as it is a videogame, "Gun Fu" is a good example of how much a developer can accomplish with a minimalistic approach.
One of the App Store's true hidden gems, "Alpha Swarm" lifts elements from the logic puzzle, physics puzzle, and shoot 'em up genres, blending them into a wonderfully refreshing experience. Now, if only it weren't marred by a few interface flaws!
An unconventional title that's difficult to categorize neatly into any one genre, "Vermes on Mars" should appeal if you're open to a sci-fi action game that's got plenty of meat on the bones and requires some methodical real-time strategizing.
Foursaken Media does it again! Just like the original "Bug Heroes," their newest is deep, content-packed and brimming with fun. The expanded story and huge environments this time around certainly don't hurt either! "Bug Heroes Quest" is a must-have for iDevice-owning Action RPG fans, but its appeal extends well beyond the genre.
Aztlan Games sure like their creepy critters! Fresh off last April's "Multipods: Escalation," they're back already with lots more crawly things, and after some hands-on time with "Vermes on Mars" we're glad to see that they're really upping the ante! Action fans who are looking for depth and some fun on-the-fly strategizing will want to keep a keen eye on this one as it nears release.
This just in: the next project that "6th Planet" collaborators Monkube and Ape Entertainment are going full throttle on is none other than "The Adventures of Retrobot!" This time around Monkube has added the talents of Endeavor Bros., a Canadian indie developer, into the creative mix, and it looks like an exciting arcade shoot 'em up/comic book fusion has resulted!
Well, color us impressed! This is the kind of arcade experience we could use a lot more of on iOS -- even if long-time fans of sidescrolling shoot-em-ups are liable to find it a little on the easy side.
I'm still trying to figure out why this bandana-wearin', heat-packin' pooch has outfitted his little sailboat with lasers and a jet engine, but suffice it to say Captain Slobber is out to prove that he's top dog. While this one is much too lightweight for sidescrolling shoot 'em up veterans, casual gamers drawn in by its art style should find it a fun and well crafted diversion for the short time it lasts.
Part fish, part armadillo, all hunter. One can only guess at what Arno is, what he's hunting exactly, or why, although the High Score meter makes it clear he's doing it for sport! He stars in a lovingly crafted indigenous take on classic arcade shooters, its one flaw being that there simply isn't more on offer.
And for Infinibee's first magic trick: a dual stick shooter without dual sticks! Yes, by the wonders of touchscreen technology, such marvels are possible. While it doesn't quite match its UI innovation with gameplay depth, this is one that should still be of interest to longtime shoot-em-up fans. Especially if, like me, you take one look at the preview video and exclaim in a fit of nostalgia: "Super Smash T.V., is that you!?"
